ISO/TC 279 Innovation Management Technical Committee is the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) committee responsible for innovation standardization. It was established in 2013 with 46 members. In addition to China, it also includes the world’s primary innovative countries, such as the United States, Germany, Japan, France, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Finland.
The ISO/TC 279 covers innovation terminology, innovation tools and methodologies, and the interaction of innovation stakeholders. By the end of February 2021, ISO/TC 279 has developed 5 international standards for innovation management, and another 5 standards are under developing. Table 1 shows the 10 standards, including the standard code, name and the latest status.
Table 1: Innovation Management Series International Standard

The ISO innovation management international standards were originally designed as the ISO 50500, but in order to better promote and implement the standards in the future, it was changed to the ISO 56000 later. It is hoped that the innovation management system standard will be as popular as the ISO 9000, ISO 14000 and other well-known standards around the world. From Table 1, we know the development of ISO 56000 standards take a long time, and they have only been released since 2019. For the five ISO innovation management international standards that have been released, the technical committee of China ISO/TC 279 - SAC/TC 554 National Knowledge Management Standardization Technical Committee is reviewing 3 of them, ISO 56002:2019, ISO 56000:2020 and ISO 56005:2020, which are, in the order, under localization to the national standards for innovation management. They are currently open for edits. See Figure 1 for details.

ISO 56005:2020 “Innovation Management-Intellectual Property Management Tools and Methods-Guidelines”, lead development by Chins, is the first international standard on intellectual property management. It is an international standard with close integration of innovation management standardization and intellectual property management standardization. Figure 2 shows the Intellectual Property Management structure with the requirement of ISO 56005: 2020.
